چکیده
A glycopeptide (also called mucopeptide) fraction of bacterial cell walls, believed to be associated with shape and structural stability of microorganisms, may, in the case of Group A streptococci, be isolated with relative ease as the formamide-insoluble residue of protease-treated cell walls (1). Analyses and certain susceptibilities to enzymic lysis of this fraction have been reported (1, 2) as well as the recognition in the lysate of a disaccharide containing 2-deoxy-2-acetamido-n-glucose and N-acetylmuramic acid (2). The present article supplies experimental details and in several regards expands the data of our preliminary communication (2).

Activation of the alternate complement pathway by peptidoglycan from streptococcal cell wall.
Activation of the alternate complement pathway in human serum by several bacterial components was compared. Peptidoglycan from group A streptococcal cell walls was the most active material, on a weight basis, followed by cell walls, protoplast membranes, and whole cells. The group-specific carbohydrate was inactive. Treatment of peptidoglycan with low concentrations of lysozyme or short periods...
متن کاملStudies on the Immunochemistry of Streptococcal Mucopeptide
Streptococcal mucopeptide, solubilized by either ultrasonic treatment or lysozyme, gave a precipitin reaction with rabbit antimucopeptide serum. A haptenic inhibitor of this reaction, which was composed of alanine, glutamic acid, and lysine in a mole ratio of 4:1:1, was isolated from a Streptomyces albus enzymes digest of Group D cell walls by ion exchange chromatography. When selected antisera...
متن کاملDegradation of 14C-labeled streptococcal cell walls by egg white lysozyme and lysosomal enzymes.
The resistance of native and trypsin-treated [14C] glucose-labeled cell walls to degradation by lysozyme and human lysosomal enzymes was confirmed. In contrast, chemically N-acetylated cell walls undergo significant degradation by these enzymes in the pH range of 4.5 to 5.5 without prior removal of the group-specific carbohydrate. N-acetylation after removal of the group A carbohydrate by forma...
متن کاملStudies on the Chemical Structure of the Streptococcal Cell Wall
The trypsinized cell walls of Group C streptococci contain two components, the group-specific carbohydrate and a mucopeptide polymer. Hot formamide extraction of Group C cell walls results in a soluble group-specific carbohydrate fraction and an insoluble mucopeptide residue. This mucopeptide, similar in composition to that of Groups A and A-variant streptococci, contains N-acetylglucosamine, N...
متن کاملPrediction of T-cell epitopes for designing a reverse vaccine against streptococcal bacteria
Streptococcal bacteria are among dangerous human pathogens with major prevalence worldwide. A good vaccine against streptococcal bacteria should have epitopes that confer protection from infection by different streptococcal bacteria types. we aimed was to recognize the most immunogenic and conserved epitopes of streptococcal bacteria, which could be a potential candidate for vaccine development...
